Eight people died in the city yesterday with five killed by accidents of various kinds and three from safety related injuries. Bodies were recovered from the East River, and two men were fatally harmed while others were injured by falls, poison, a revolver, rope, lumber blast and debris. Two additional fatalities occurred in New Jersey from falling plank and rocks.
At Wall and Water streets a rope and beam failed on a derelict scaffold, killing 32 year old William Walters and injuring Charles Philgarde and Frederick Brown. Brown later released. Philgarde remained hospitalized after serious bruising. Supervisor Henry Schreier detained. Fuller Construction Company building two five story offices.
Emerich Kiss, an elderly Hoboken cabinetmaker, was found dead inside his Mercer Street basement home. Police report wounds on both arms and a bloodied cot ten feet from the body, with exteriorly locked doors and a sealed scene. Coroner authorized removal to undertaking rooms. son Emerich Kiss Jr. lives on East Twelfth Street. Local undertaker and a Volk rider guarded the scene sharing little details.
Edmond Simmons a 40 year old Swedish worker living on Cherry street was instantly killed at 2 a.m. yesterday while unloading lumber from the steamship Seminole Clyde Line at Pier 2 East River. He stood at the hatchway guiding the sling when a mass of lumber swung and struck him breaking his neck. Policeman Barrett of the Steamboat Squad summoned an ambulance and the surgeon said the death was instantaneous.
The body of an unidentified man was recovered yesterday from the Bay at Fiftieth Street Brooklyn by John Wilson of Fifty third Street. In his clothing were a matchbox marked M Wirth Wein Columbus Ohio a plain gold ring engraved with S J Oct 18th 1857 and P
A female body was recovered from the East River opposite Ward’s Island near 107th Street. Police say there were no visible marks of violence or identification. The body was sent to the Brooklyn Morgue and a small gold locket with a woman's portrait and a box of stamps were found nearby. Policeman Blake from Manhattan State Hospital reported the find.
Rosalina Jardina, five, of 816 Kent Ave Brooklyn, was fatally injured when car 2 367 on Park Ave struck her as she played in the street. She died last night as police dispersed a crowd that gathered after the incident. Motorman Frank Kelleher 277 was arrested at Flush ing-ave police station.
William Barnett of 339 West Forty-fourth Street was hit by rock fragments during a Broadway blast near Forty-fourth to Forty-fifth Streets. He suffered head and internal injuries and was taken to Roosevelt Hospital. Foreman Thomas Muller, 40, of 331 Liberty Street Union Hill NJ, was detained at West Forty-seventh Street police station.
A 40 foot pile driver toppled during bridge work over the Hackensack River injuring four and killing Giovanni Marcola, 38. Giuseppe Garrello, 40, suffered a fractured skull and broken arm, while John Cantello, 25, had leg and arm fractures. Garrello may die. The men were treated at St Marys Hospital in Hoboken.
Theresa Henning, 45, of 102 West Fifty sixth street, was killed at 74 West Fifty fifth street where she worked as a cleaner. While dusting a second floor balustrade she toppled to the ground floor, crashing through a glass skylight over a stable. A surgeon determined she was instantly dead. the body was found by Mr Peploe in a pool of blood.
Frank McGough eighty eight years old slept on West Forty first street and in Roosevelt Hospital. He was smoking before the fatal blaze and died from burns. The incident occurred near a stable at No. 331 night he fell asleep with his pipe. John wards resided at No. 322 West street but not before he had been found.

A Manhattan Railway Company car was partly pushed off an elevated track at Sixth Ave and Fifty ninth St yesterday afternoon. The car remained suspended for hours, blocking Sixth Ave surface cars for about 15 minutes. No one was aboard the car or in the path of debris. The rear car struck a bumper, which fell to the street. Laborers removed wreckage and trains were delayed briefly as crews secured the car and cleared the line.
