A damaged U S freighter was blown up off the Irish coast as London charged a German submarine attack. Washington awaits full facts and reports from the scene.
The Ryndam passenger Martha Vals praised the Kondam crew and the South Carolina for their prompt actions in transferring rescued passengers after the South Carolina ferried them to safety. Mrs Daly described the chaotic scene on deck as passengers, many in life preservers, were lowered into lifeboats.
The British battleship Triumph was torpedoed and sank off Gallipoli while supporting Allied forces at Dardanelles operations. Most of the crew, including the captain and commander, were saved as destroyers and small craft pursued the submarine until dark. The steamship Nebraskan of the American Hawaiian Line was torpedoed near South Cliff by Fastnet while outbound from Liverpool to Philadelphia. All crew escaped by boats, but returned to the ship. No lives were lost, and no mine fields were present, indicating a ruthless German attack.
Washington May 24 Officials of the State Department anxiously awaited details of whether the American steamer Nebraskan was struck by a German torpedo or a mine. Ambassador Page was ordered to investigate, and Ambassador Gerard to seek German information. Page wired a report, to be reviewed by President Wilson, amid tension over potential German responsibility and broader war-time tensions in the Irish Sea.
