Supreme Court Rules on Capital Value and Inheritance Taxes

The Supreme Court today ruled two tax cases. It held that an asset’s increased value cannot be added to invested capital for tax purposes and that inheritance taxes paid to a state cannot be deducted from the net estate for federal taxation. The La Belle Iron Works case centered on Minnesota land valuations and capital stock implications. The decision clarifies lines for capital and asset value in revenue acts of 1916 and 1917.
