Organized twelve years ago, the church began in stores on Manhattan Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue, with a 600 seat auditorium, groined ceiling, basement Sunday school facilities, a pastor’s residence, and a Hutchings-Votey organ donated by members. Growth of a Lutheran Parish in New York City

The article traces the early formation of a Lutheran congregation in New York starting with an initial pastorless group in 1888, reorganized in 1889 under Rev. C A Tappert, and then led since November 1 1889 by Rev Dr E Brennecke. It notes the building of a new Gothic church at 164 West 10th Street dedicated September 12 1890, rapid growth to about 1000 communicants and 500 Sunday school members, and details of the pastor’s education and honors. It also describes the church design by George W Conable, a 175 foot spire, and lists parish statistics including 6939 communicants and hundreds of school pupils. Two major yearbook events are the addition of the Church of the Intercession as Trinity’s chapel and the closing of Trinity Hospital.
