Threat of General Coal Strike Halts Mines Near Scranton
Prominent coal operators in this city warned last night that if the delegates at the Hezleton Pennsylvania convention declare a general strike of 147000 anthracite miners, all mines would shut down indefinitely. W H Truesdale president of the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad said the strike would be general and may last long. He noted police promised by mine owners would protect property and workers, not nonunion men. John W Gates, after a Morgan conference, put the odds at 100 to 1 against a general strike. Secretary Easter of the Civic Federation sought to prevent a strike, while Senator Hanna weighs peace prospects. The Air Line Limited train from Boston to Shore Line will be transferred to become the Sperbocker Limited with parlor cars.
