The President led a nation’s tribute as seventeen young American sailors and Marines, dead at Vera Cruz, were honored with full military rites. Flags half staff, crowds and a solemn procession marked the high honors for the enlisted dead, treated as superlative heroes in death.
Soldiers and sailors stood at attention as the Presidential limousine passed the flag draped caskets. The Secret Service had weighed risk and altered plans, letting the President appear unannounced to dramatic effect, riding along Broadway in a solemn, unflustered manner amid cheers from workers above the Equitable Building.
Vienna reports an unconfirmed rumor that Baron Nordenskjeld's Arctic expedition party was slain by Indians in South America. A March dispatch from Belem, Brazil, notes companion Johnberg was killed, with death details undisclosed.
Boward Kreger a member of the Excelsior Volunteer Engine Company helped fight a blaze at his two story Pearl River home in Rockland County. He learned his wife and two children were inside as the fire raged. Bodies of Mrs Kreger and Clifford 4 lay in a rear bedroom while eight year old Titza was found suffocated in the attic. Coroner investigators say the bedroom may be the fire’s origin.
Mexico City May 11 Muerta approves release of John Ht Silliman American Consul Saltillo. He will be brought to this city and placed at the disposal of the Brazilian Location which agrees to see that he departs the republic.
District Attorney Whitman opened the prosecution in the second trial of Charles Hocker for the murder of Herman Hosenthal. Becker’s defense, led by Manton, challenged venue, sought a mini trial, and clashed with the DA, while reporters from The Globe faced contempt fines totaling 1000 dollars. The defense signaled a strategy to apportion blame to gamblers and rivals, aiming to preserve points for appeal.
Norfolk reporters say an explosion in the engine room of the steamship Jefferson near the Virginia Capes caused one death and seven injuries. The water tender died. Chief Engineer Portlock and six others were hurt as the ship headed to New York from Norfolk. A wrecking tug goes to tow the Jefferson to Norfolk.
