Full Honors Given Enlisted Men at Vera Cruz Funeral

The President led a nation’s tribute as seventeen young American sailors and Marines, dead at Vera Cruz, were honored with full military rites. Flags half staff, crowds and a solemn procession marked the high honors for the enlisted dead, treated as superlative heroes in death.

Fire tragedy in Pearl River claims Kreger family

Boward Kreger a member of the Excelsior Volunteer Engine Company helped fight a blaze at his two story Pearl River home in Rockland County. He learned his wife and two children were inside as the fire raged. Bodies of Mrs Kreger and Clifford 4 lay in a rear bedroom while eight year old Titza was found suffocated in the attic. Coroner investigators say the bedroom may be the fire’s origin.

Blast on liner kills one and injures seven

Norfolk reporters say an explosion in the engine room of the steamship Jefferson near the Virginia Capes caused one death and seven injuries. The water tender died.
