Two U S ocean fliers reach Halifax with one reported missing as they begin the second stage of their flight. The 540 mile trip was completed at a rate of about a mile per minute and the flagship led the procession at Halifax.
The NC-1 NC-3 and NC-4 departed Rockaway at 10 AM for a transatlantic leg. NC-1 and NC-3 landed after 540 nautical miles at 6:55 NY time, 7:55 Halifax, while NC-4, after 2 hours 20 minutes, had engine trouble near Chatham Massachusetts. Admiral command leads NC-4 to proceed with three engines toward Outer Cliff Maine. towers reports NC-1 to follow from Halifax toward Trepao today.
Halifax N S May 8. The first leg of the transatlantic air flight ends as two Navy seaplanes the NC-1 and NC-3 moor at Halifax harbor after nine hours and 150 miles from Rockaway Beach. Cmdr Tower of NOS and Cmdr Bellinger of NC-1 lead the crews. Ships guide the planes to the Baltimore. Continued on page thirteen.
New York Victory Loan rally at the Metropolitan Opera House netted $125,000,000 in two hours as thousands bid from $50 to $13,000,000 for King Albert portraits and German guns. Deputy Commissioner Wallis bought the painting for the police, while bankers including J P Morgan and others funded large blocks amid wartime fund-raising fervor.
War time substitution by women makes it tough for men to find work in peace. NYC unemployment 100000. demand for women workers exceeds supply. Officials cite reasons from marriage rates to wage gaps and note some sectors retain women as men return.
AY Sliington reports the Department of Agriculture forecasts the largest winter wheat crop in U S history for this year's harvest. The estimate nears 400 million bushels with a value near 2.034 billion dollars under a 2.26 per bushel price guarantee.
The plan to stabilize steel prices collapses as an unrestricted iron and steel market takes effect. The American Iron and Steel Institute leading producers and railroad representatives failed to reach a final agreement in a last conference. Walker D. Hines was absent. Henry B. Spencer and J. C. Frank Gould seeks removal of his brother George J. Gould as trustee of their father’s estate in a New York Supreme Court filing. Represented by Walter B. Walker, he alleges bad faith and self dealing in managing trusts, depriving the estate and others of funds, totaling about 25 million dollars. The petitioner, then in Paris after divorcing his second wife, argues trusteeship harmed heirs and estate interests. Continued on page twelve.
