United States merchant fleet braces for a complete walkout as all crews quit over wage disputes. Labor officials report widespread coastal port walkouts from Gulf to Pacific as unions push for higher pay, threatening stoppages at major ports and forcing possible government mediation.
Athens reports that King Constantine is expected to abdicate in favor of his brother George after a visit to Smyrna. The prophecy cites revisions to the Airvea treaty and territorial handbacks to the Turks, with prior signals of abdication dated mid March.
The United States Shipping Board imposes a 15 percent wage cut for marine engineers and firemen on its vessels. Admiral W S Benson, chairman, says the reduction is necessary and will be enforced regardless of shipping effects. The board will recruit idle men to fill positions to operate ships and aims to man every vessel possible despite potential disturbances.
Detectives from West 100th Street arrested two men and a woman and a 10 year old nephew of a suspect in a Chicago bank robbery case. The arrests followed a confrontation at 105 West 109th Street after a lead from a Chicago chief of detectives. Suspects were identified as Arthur Bernstein and Joseph Kelly with Mrs Pauline Bernstein. the boy was Max Gross. The case links to the April 21 bank robbery of the State Bank of Chicago and a fugitive search.
In the last forty eight hours four men were murdered and another shot by patrolmen amid a citywide spate of killings. Names and exact locations vary but include a bartender dying at a saloon on Jofferson Ave and Sumner Avenues and a victim found at a restaurant on Avenue Parl Ludwig. Police report an additional melee between two individuals at 191 West 1834 Street.
Otto Hater, a Bradford tobacco salesman with two wives, was jailed in Elk County on a bigamy charge after his first wife Hazel Herris returned home. Police say he cannot recall meeting his second wife, and a taxi driver assisted him into their Craig Street apartment.
The Holy Roller pastor Bolden Callicout was jailed in the Mayon County Jail on a murder charge in the death of sixteen year old Clayton Kreppe. The body was found decapitated in an onion patch. Ellwood Black, a friend of the slain boy, reported that the preacher appeared on the scene and began shooting. Black was lightly wounded and fled.
The Eastern representative of Badger Water Meter Co Milwaukee, William Gotti, allegedly was offered money to advance a Board of Aldermen resolution admitting the company's meter in the city. Cetti refused, saying he would not engage in such acts, while Untermyer questions Mayor Hylan's veto and urges a special message to permit competition against the water meter monopoly.
Washington May 1 The Treasury secretary urges repeal of the excess profits tax and a readjustment of income tax rates to cap normal tax plus surtax at 40 percent this year and 38 percent thereafter. He recommends preserving levies on transportation and amusement tickets, adding taxes on luxuries and imports, and cutting army navy appropriations to ease war tax burdens.
Frederick Weitz and Frances Wilson were arrested after a Broadway chase. Michael Minvini, a stewards, reported a wallet with $165 missing and identified the taxi pair who offered to share the ride toward the Bronx. A six inch knife was produced as the suspects fled toward 228th Street. The pursuit ended with police intercepting the speeding taxi at West 177th Street station. Wells lived on Broadway and his companion gave an Amsterdam Avenue address.
Paris dispatch reports Premier Briand ordering immediate mobilization in France with troops trains heading to the northeast within 48 hours. France conscripts from 1919 class to join regiments as French forces plan to seize Hamburg Bremen and Lubeck with possible British cooperation.
Washington May 1 Germany is believed to have over played its hand in counting on action by the United States. Officials, including Secretary Hughes, show concern over Germany’s approach and the foreign office’s stance toward the Allied conference, with no immediate contact expected until further steps are defined.
In Baltimore Mrs Lewandowski feuds over her husband Ludwig's attentions to a home brewer. She traps him in an open trunk, hides the key, and calls police as he is discovered inside. The case goes to police court with warnings issued to the offender.
Berlin officials say Germany will not contact the London conference while awaiting President Harding's answer to Berlin’s counterproposal.
