Washington reports Dr Alonzo Taylor a food expert has been appointed by the Department of Agriculture to study curtailing grain use in liquor production. The department hopes Taylor's findings will guide a radical limit on distilled and fermented liquors in the United States. Last year beer brewing used 48 million bushels of barley 17 million of corn grits and 2 million of rice. Corn used in distilled spirits in 1916 was 2,069,042 bushels and rye 216,612 bushels.
London dispatch reports German authorities ordered cancellation of the Berlin order placing American residents in enemy status, claiming Germany does not regard itself at war with the United States. Americans remain under police supervision despite the change.
The Pennsylvania Railroad announced steps to substitute women for men in some departments and enroll sixteen women as yeomen in the ways reserve to act as cable centers. Some may be sent to France as nurse aides, with pay of eighty eight dollars monthly, as the railroad trains a reserve force to meet labor shortages and future needs.
Boston announces that women will serve as conductors on elevated and street cars. H B Potter of the Boston Elevated Railway testified before the Public Service Commission that emergency staffing requires women conductors as about 1500 road employees are to be drafted under the draft act. He noted attempts to obtain motorman exemptions from Washington had failed and warned of a critical period with unfilled equipment orders and only 25 days of coal on hand.
