Removing Trainshed At Grand Central In Special Demolition
The New York Central reports half of the Grand Central trainshed has been torn down as part of a plan to create a larger station. Workers use a wooden traveller with five iron wheels to support the arch while slices ten feet deep are removed. The shed, built in 1879 with English ironwork, involved 65 tons of bolts and 90,000 square feet of corrugated iron. About 1,027 trains operate daily, and demolition is timed to minimize disruption.
