Boston March 29 The advance of 10 percent given to twenty seven thousand Fall River mill workers has spread across Southern New England. By April 7 about sixty thousand workers may have their wages increased. Rhode Island and Massachusetts mills posted notices for a 1 percent raise effective April 7, with larger mills expected to follow suit.
The 18000 mill operatives in seven large Lowell plants faced a threatened strike over wage increases. Textile Council delegates temporarily averted the walkout by negotiating with mill agents amid pressure from business leaders. Some workers demanded a 9 percent rise, while mills reportedly cannot grant such a wage hike. A New Bedford conference collapsed due to the secretary’s absence, delaying a wage increase decision.
