Francis B. Harrison is described as a possible Tammany candidate for mayor with McClellan stepping aside. The piece details Tammany Hall discord under Murphy, McAdoo reforms, gambler and poolroom opposition, and a contemplated switch to Harrison to unify support and head off Hearst bolting.
Edward W. Berger mayor and police chief of Weehawken New Jersey says John Leroy of the Hotel Normandie tried to stab him after an altercation near the Metropole Hotel. Berger displayed a gold badge at the station and Leroy was arrested. no knife was found on Leroy.
Dealers and shippers in the Chesapeake Bay report enormous crab losses from a prolonged freezing period. Millions of crabs killed by the cold are washing ashore in the lower bay, raising concerns about the market. The note ends with an advertisement for Dewey's Port Wine and Grape Juice from F. Dewey & Sons Co.
New York Central officials plan a gradual shift from steam to electric motive power. Senator Depew predicts no steam engines will remain in the U S within fifty years except in museums. Tests of electric motors on the Grand Central to Croton division are satisfactory and shop plans with General Electric and ALCO in Schenectady prepare for mass production.
A Niagara Falls dispatch reports New York Central plans a dominant electric railway merger with Canadian power and rail firms. Negotiations involve Frederic Nicholls and Van derbilt interests to acquire Electric Development Company Ontario, Toronto and Niagara Power, Toronto and Hamilton Railway, and Niagara St Catharines Toronto Electric Railway. The system would link falls to Hamilton without becoming a steam road.
Caracas dispatch reports President Castro returning to Caracas with strong hostility toward American and French interests, especially the French Cable Company. Officials expect possible actions against the company or its concession, while a warship presence is considered as a potential influence. The court may render a cable concession judgment next week. A State Department cable notes the case remains pending on the docket.
Colonel C. B. Taylor of Montreal described as a wealthy coal operator along the Norfolk and Western line was fined zero and sentenced to ten days in Williamson West Virginia by Judge Wilkinson for contempt after prosecutor Martin Douglas accused him of lying while addressing Miss Martha Davis. Attempts to obtain release have failed.
Albert M. Stevens of Willimantic, a Yale College sophomore, was chosen as Connecticut’s Rhodes scholar from a list presented by Oxford authorities. The selection committee included Yale President Hadley and other college leaders from Trinity and Westminster, marking the second Connecticut recipient.
Senator Stevens announced at the Fifth Avenue Hotel that the Gas Inquiry Commission hopes to complete its work and report to the legislature before adjournment. Gustavus T. Kirby was named junior counsel, joining senior counsel Charles E. Hughes.
Desperate Mrs. Kate Rock forty two of 232 East 41st street attempted suicide by jumping from a third floor window. She survives with multiple contusions after being found unconscious on the pavement and treated at Bellevue Hospital by Dr. Hall.
A white mob attacked police and rioters clashed near Amsterdam Avenue and West 60th Street. Patrolman Patrick Phelan was beaten while three officers and two more helpers aided him after arrests of six individuals. Stores run by Black residents had recently been robbed amid broad social unrest.
In Edwardsville Illinois March 25 a Circuit Court jury awarded Tobin five dollars after Winkelmeyer's dog bit him as Tobin tried to nap inside the dog's kennel. The defense argued the dog defended its premises and the jury agreed.
A party of five from Georgiana and Holyoke faced a squall returning from Ocean Beach. Four passengers including Mr. Moore and Edith Moore drowned when their boat capsized and waves overwhelmed them. Mr. Miller survived, drifting to shore as others sank unable to hold on.

Miss Gladys Chapman of 167 West 133th Street was assaulted in West 28th Street near Sixth Avenue by a Romanian engineer identified as Rudolph Meller who claimed to be friendly. Joseph Robinson, a colored inmate described as a trusty, and a white prisoner escaped last Sunday morning using a plan now revealed. The white man had been isolated for diphtheria after choosing Robinson as his jailer, and the pair were found in their beds only after the keeper checked hours later. No trace of either man has been found.
The White Star steamer Cretic which left New York March 18 for Naples with Secretary Hay and Mrs. Hay aboard reached Ponta Delgada in the Azores at 4 PM. Hay said he was feeling well and enjoyed a comfortable voyage.
Frederick Levigne a Westchester deputy sheriff was arrested at his Rye area home by United States Secret Service on a perjury charge connected to citizenship frauds. Evidence cited shows organized cliques issued full papers for a fee with witnesses supplied. Levigne reportedly confessed after a pistol threat during arrest.
Mason Felix Connor living at 240 West 4th Street was run over by a hansom owned by E Rollins Morse of 453 Fifth Avenue. He was knocked down as he stepped in front of the slowly moving auto. no bones were broken but both legs were injured. Commissioner McAdoo aided him. Morse’s driver was not arrested.
Seaboard Air Line Ry advertises three daily high class trains between Pinehurst Camden and Jacksonville via Atlanta and Southwest. Office at 118 Broadway.
In St Petersburg on March 26 the industrial crisis deepens as factory owners lock out about thirty thousand workers. Vandalism at a large cotton mill sparks unrest while workers fear bombs and violence. Officials warn of deadly retaliation if troops fire, and Social Revolutionists threaten targets including Grand Duke Alexeiff and the Imperial family.
Leon H. Degraff, heir to about 150000, is discharged from the 15th Cavalry at Fort Ethan Allen after one year of service. He will move to New York to join H D Cochrane in real estate on West 125th Street. Degraff, son of the late W H Degraff, plans to live with his mother in New York while his estate is managed by a guardian.
Washington officials begin delivering Confederate battle flags captured in the War of the Rebellion to governors in Southern states. General Ainsworth, acting under a special act of Congress, informs governors and outlines War Department steps for return. About 540 flags exist, with some unable to be identified.
At a University Club dinner the American Academy of Fine Arts in Rome announced a $100000 contribution from James Stillman president of National City Bank to support the permanent home in Villa Miraflori Via Nomentana near Porta Pia. Other founders include J Pierpont Morgan Henry Walters William K Vanderbilt Harvard University and Charles F McKim.
The Nebraska legislature voted to combat the Cordage and Binder Twine Trust by allocating 20 000 for a state plant to manufacture binder twine. Operated by convicts at the state penitentiary, it aims to relieve Nebraska farmers from high prices and may expand to Kansas and Town markets if successful, with work to start immediately for summer harvest readiness.

Two transatlantic liners, the Parisian of the Allan Line and the Albano of Hamburg America, collided near the Halifax harbor entrance. Crew and passengers remained orderly while lifeboats and life preservers equipped all aboard.
James Connors a janitor of 998 Islave Street was jailed at the Fast Jtst-station last night charged with causing the death of Paul Levesque of 402 East 48th Street. Levesque told his wife he was thrown down stairs by Connors after being dispossessed on March 1% for back rent. Connors claims Levesque was intoxicated and probably fell.
Mrs. Alidana Gray, a Middletown State Hospital nurse and former Ellenville private nurse, has just inherited a legacy of 10.09 percent from a patient she cared for. Her husband died of ptomaine poisoning after they ran a private sanatorium, and she later suffered injuries that confined her to hospitals for a long period.
In Brockton Massachusetts on March 3 the ongoing relief effort for victims of last Monday's explosion gathers momentum. The committee hopes to provide each affected family with one dollar and notes the funds have reached city Treasurer Nena.
