Morena Delivers Regal Elizabeth In Wagner Tannhauser

Mme Berta Morena charmed as Elizabeth in Wagner’s Tannhauser at the Metropolitan Opera last night. Burman offered incisive but clipped tones as the minstrel knight while Van Rooy’s Wolfram sang effectively though with restrained warmth. Fremstad as Venus impressed in pose yet word clarity suffered, Blass’s Landgrave followed suit. Morena’s Elizabeth stood statuesque and regal with pure tone and true declamation, though lacking sensuous warmth. The balance of text and music varied across performers, and Morena’s dignified presence promised stronger city reception.
