Beethoven Cycle Concert At Carnegie Hall Fills Gallery

The New York Symphony Society’s third Beethoven cycle concert at Carnegie Hall drew a near full house with gallery and balcony tickets selling out before the start. Damrosch Barrére and Mesnard performed the Trio for harpsichord flute and bassoon, though the harpsichord instrument proved discordant next to the flute and bassoon. The critics suggest a real harpsichord would better capture Beethoven’s intended tone, noting the autographs favored clavicembalo over pianoforte and praising the ensemble’s sonority and precision despite tempo variances in the first allegro.
