Reports say Goldwater and Bruere plan to leave city offices, with friction noted between officials and the mayor denied. Bruere seeks steadier employment after long service, while Goldwater contemplates returning to hospital work, aiming to advance Mt Sinai hospital plans and city health duties.
Washington reports that radiogram from Pensacola states aeroplane A 12 capsized in the air and was a total wreck. Lieut Richard C. Saufley and Ensign Edward McDonnell were aboard but escaped serious injury. Lieutenant Commander Musting, in command at Pensacola, relayed the wreck news to Washington.
The Admiralty announced the British collier Invergyle of 1141 tons was torpedoed and sunk off Cresswell, England. All crew were saved. The report lists seven British merchant steamers torpedoed since March 10, with two sunk and others unconfirmed. The Indian City was sunk with all but one firedman rescued. other ships including Florasan, Andalusian, Headlands, and Hartdune are noted with varying rescue outcomes. Captain Williams of the Indian City recounts the encounter and surrender of the ship to a German submarine prior to sinking.
The Admiralty reports from the war start to March 16 show eighty eight merchant vessels sunk or captured. Of these sixty four fell to hostile cruisers, twelve by mines, and twenty two by submarines, totaling a gross tonnage of three hundred nine thousand and forty five. Forty seven fishing vessels were sunk or captured, with nineteen blown by mines and twenty eight captured by hostile craft.

Samuel Bowles editor and publisher of The Springfield Republican died at 12:30 am after days of illness following a cerebral hemorrhage. Born October 15, 1851 in Springfield, he joined The Republican as a reporter, became publisher and editor in chief after his father’s death, and had served in business management since 1875.
Boston March 13 Mayor Curley settled a long dispute by claiming St Patrick the patron saint of Ireland was born in Scotland. Historians vary with some saying France and others placing his birth in Scotland or France. He stated he tended sheep as a boy in Scotland and was stolen to Ireland before escaping to France to be educated.
Bordeaux march 13 Sarah Bernhardt today left the hospital where her right leg was amputated and went by automobile to her home at Andernes. She was accompanied by her son Maurice. The surgeon's bulletin said Mme Bernhardt had recovered completely from the operation.
