Albany March 11 The Senate defeated Gilchrist bill to make it a misdemeanor to throw a baseball at a person on Coney Island this summer The measure would turn any ball thrower into a criminal and drew sharp exchanges among senators including Thompson Jones Wagner and Cullen They mocked the bill saying it treated baseball as a crime and compared it to banning peanuts for a pink monkey
The German cruiser Prinz Eitel Friedrich entered drydock in Newport News for repairs after six months of commerce raiding. Commander Thierichens told officials he does not intend to intern the ship and argued the Will iam P Frye’s wheat cargo was contraband. Crew statements aligned with Captain Kleinan’s account of the Frye sinking off the River Plate, with crews of sunken ships released and some passengers deported from Floride.
Washington reports say the United States will press Germany for reparation after the William P Frye was sunk by the Prinz Eitel Friedrich in the South Atlantic. President Wilson directs a full inquiry by the Treasury and State Departments to establish facts before demanding reparations.
