Ice Inquiry Continues as Grand Jury Denies Transfer
Justice Dowling urged the grand jury to proceed on its own to determine indictments in the American Ice Company case. The panel unanimously voted to continue the hearing, rejected Deputy AG Osborne’s request to move the matter to another grand jury, and apologized for disputed publicized correspondence. Osborne defended withdrawal plans while Dowling warned against disrespect and reaffirmed the jury’s broad powers to investigate.

Young Mariner Brings Fantastical Tale Of Starbuck Shipwreck
An imaginative former crew member aboard the Voltaire narrates a vivid, mythic version of the Starbuck disaster. William Winn, said to have killed himself in his cabin, supposedly faced ruin after twenty two sailors perished, while William Kuhlmann claims to be second mate and recounts a forty eight day open boat ordeal. He claims only he and Winn navigated, with lifeboat rescue by Cambuskenneth and later hospital stay in San Francisco. He shows three dried lemons as a relic, tied to an albatross omen.

Gas price not fixed by court in New York case
Judge Hough of the U.S. Circuit Court refused to fix a constitutional rate for gas, holding that no court can set a rate and that 8 cents per thousand feet would be confiscatory. He valued the gas company’s total assets at about 59.85 million, including 12.0 million in franchises, and upheld a 6 percent return as the lowest legislatively fair rate for New York City gas operations. The decision pushes the case toward the U.S. Supreme Court and notes the state is estopped from taxing property inconsistently.
