The Russian army withdraws from Shakhe while Japanese forces hold north and northwest of Moukden in a fierce engagement. Kuroki’s action crushed the Russian left and shifted Japanese weight to the west, prompting evacuation. Great stores burned and losses are described as enormous on both sides.
Reports from Moukden describe a tense withdrawal of Russian forces south and southeast of the city as Japanese troops push west and northwest. Fire ravages commissary warehouses, telegraph lines falter, and both sides trade cannonade while spies and proclamations add to the siege atmosphere.
Washington reports from Tokio that Japan won a great victory before Moukden as Russian forces retreat north. Casualties are heavy on both sides. General Kuropatkin is said badly beaten in what is described as the bloodiest battle of the war. Japanese troops dislodged the enemy near Ma Chun Tan and are pursuing northward. The Russians evacuated the Shakhe River line and burned supplies before fleeing eastward.
The report from St. Petersburg on March 9 states the battle of Moukden ended in a Russian defeat. Field Marshal Oyama’s offensive skill is praised as among the best since Napoleon, while Kuropatkin seeks to defend his title as a master of retreats and safely move his army and vast train to The Pass. Russian estimates show confidence in Kuropatkin’s ability to emerge from a two‑front threat, though the Japanese troops appear exhausted. A rear end collision at the West Farms branch terminal sent fifty policemen in two waiting cars to the floor as the crash tore glass from the cars. Six officers were injured, one unconscious before being released home. twenty five passengers escaped injury. The motorman cited brake failure or slippery tracks. no arrests were made.
A long conference among Albany officials and Hudson River counties produced a tentative agreement on extending New York City water, allowing Westchester cities to tap the system, giving Putnam exclusivity to streams in their county and Dutchess, with Ulster receiving damages and reservoirs. Representatives from New York City and upstate counties plan a bill next week, while Assemblyman Yale will push a separate measure to bar NYC from taking streams on the Croton River east branch below Brewster.

On the second day of the subway and elevated strike the Interborough company led by ground that strikers are outsiders and declined Mayor McClellan mediation. The 6th Ave line ran regularly while 2d Ave was closed at night. Widespread delays and accidents occurred with several injuries including two policemen. Strike breakers swarmed into the city as surface lines carried 500000 more riders. Interborough predicts the back of the strike is broken and normal service will return soon, while leaders claim the strike will win. The Rapid Transit Commission plans to meet today to consider action.
