Open ballot boxes in New York recount case ends in appeal
The Court of Appeals ruling opens the door to recounts in the 1905 mayoral contest. Hearst's lawyers gain leverage while McClellan's title faces renewed scrutiny. A jury trial will decide the validity of ballots and preservation of boxes, with 1934 boxes stored awaiting examination.
Decision Favors Mayor in Struck Jury Appeal
The appellate court confirms an order for a struck jury in the Hearst McClellan mayoralty case, upholding the lower tribunal’s action. The appellant challenges the previous ruling, but the court affirmed the decision and the mayor remains in contention.

The British Ambassador reports satisfaction with Ottawa talks and expects ratifications this session. Newfoundland treaty negotiations continue slowly but acceptably while an arbitration treaty with Great Britain is near completion. The Senate may soon review six Hague treaties and two unsigned conventions on privateering and neutral duties. Irish protests against any Britain treaties prompt warnings from the Ancient Order of Hibernians about possible political risk.
