Model Venement Aims To Teach Housing For Mothers

In the House of Aquila on Stanton Street a model venement is to be opened to train girls and mothers in home management so husbands stay away from saloons. The historic Epiphany Chapel site, now under Episcopal Mission Society, is rebuilt at 26 dollars and will house a day nursery and a settlement tenement. The space will support hospital and charity work, with a chapel opening next week and St Priscilla as the chapel name.

Thompson Explains Bronx Engineering Charge System

Samuel Thompson, engineer in the Bronx Bureau of Highways, testified before Commissioner Mitchel about charging engineering and inspection time to assessment proceedings. He described using a fixed fee baseline and reallocating surplus, with about 29,000 dollars yearly for preliminary surveys, and said lost time and holidays were funded from that fund. He could not confirm whether chief engineer Briggs or President Heffen knew of the system, which had been in use for years. The hearing paused until Monday as officials noted criminal-prosecution limits that may affect entries.
