Amalgamated Copper and American Smelting rose, Calumet and Hecla fell sharply in Boston, while Missouri Pacific posted a small gain despite December earnings declines. Rumors of a possible withdrawal of the Hepburn bill fueled the late rally, even as street prospects for revenue and deficits drew caution.
