The first test of high pressure street hydrants in West Street near Gansevoort, by the Fire Department and Water Department, drenched Chief Croker and assistants but proved the system’s superiority over steam engines. Unrecorded Sea Fight Between American Skyrocket and Scottish Sharp
A newly surfaced Edinburgh archive letter details a 1779 sea battle off Ireland between the American brig Skyrocket under Captain Burke and the Scottish vessel Sharp captained by Archibald Bogg. The Skyrocket, carrying sixteen guns and over 120 men, engaged the Sharp, which wielded carronades and six 12-pounders, in a two hour fight resulting in one fatality aboard the Sharp. The conflict marked an early use of carronades in combat and followed the Skyrocket's earlier capture of the Betsy from Clyde. The episode prompted Glasgow underwriters to reward Captain Bogg and support McEwan’s family, with further notes on related prize actions tied to John Paul Jones’s squadron.
