A raging blaze swept through Salem damaging both factories and homes. Officials estimate losses could reach up to 20 million dollars as the fire burned for hours, destroying miles of property across industrial and residential areas. Fire crews battled the flames. several structures were left uninhabitable.
A massive fire in Salem Massachusetts caused an estimated twenty million dollars in damage burning the Kern leather factory and sweeping two miles of the leather district. It forced thousands from their homes and endangered landmarks such as the Peabody Museum and The House of the Seven Gables. Firemen used dynamite at the railroad yard to halt the blaze while the city went dark after the electric plant burned out.

He reassured a nearby comrade and joined in the lighthearted mood after the incident.
James McGannon a deputy police officer and a detective aided by a bystander stopped a self inflicted wound by Mrs Julia Demarest in her flat at 363 East Asithst. blood loss was halted using improvised tourniquet and stones. The mother in law accused the husband. Demarest denies. McGannon worked with the American Bank Note Company employee.
The Children’s Aid Society to run nine excursions this summer under Astor patronage. The first trip sails along the Hudson to Bath Beach, then returns via the Narrows ending at the summer home. Luncheon with ice cream and cake will be served onboard.
In the University of Michigan commencement list two students are reported dead. Samuel Regester of Rice's Landing Pennsylvania postponed an appendicitis operation to finish exams and died. Toy Davis of Mineral Ridge Ohio, senior in the Taw class, drowned the day after his final exam.
President Roosevelt rebuked District Attorney Whitman in Sagamore Hill talks and urged a clean Progressive fight in New York. He signaled opposition to Barnes controlled candidacies and hinted at a bombshell statement from Whitman on his stance against the Republican machine.
The Resolute won the annual New York Yacht Club regatta on Long Island Sound off Glen Cove, finishing 5 minutes 9 seconds ahead of Vanitie and 7 minutes 16 seconds before Defiance after a 33 1 3 percent mile triangular course. The Vanitie, hindered by accidents and a taut sail, trailed in third.

A new auto apparatus purchased two weeks ago ran wild last night and crashed into a tree in West Brighton Staten Island fatally injuring fireman Doran and injuring four others and a small boy. Doran died from skull fractures while others were rushed to St Vincent's Hospital and Smith Infirmary with expected recovery.
One hundred one girls graduated yesterday in the commercial course. Each gown including pattern cost 95 cents. More than twenty have obtained permanent city positions. Miss Katherine Mannix won the prize job in the mailing and filing room of a wholesale house. Wages start at 7 dollars per week. Miss Mannix will have a notably large salary for a new entrant. Principal Dr. William H. Maxwell delivered the address and presented diplomas.
Columbia students aboard the steam yacht Valkyrie were stranded on a rock near Ma Bridge for about two hours while a crowd on the bridge jeered. The boat drifted free after a police launch hauled it back. no one was harmed and the voyage to Ithaca continued with cheers and song.
Five Chicago lawyers sue William Guggenheim and his brothers over unpaid legal fees in a Cook County divorce case brought by his first wife Gree Brown Guggenheim Wales. Plaintiffs claim $25,000 for work defending the action between 1913 and 1914, noting they spent $18,? and received $5,245.15. The filing does not detail other family members' liability. The Chicago suit followed Mrs. Wahl's action which faced disbarment threats against Untermyer and others who represented Mr. Guggenheim.
