Oil Witnesses Testify in Government Suit to Break Up Standard Oil

The first witness, Lewis KR Speare, president of Alden Speare's Sons, testified about Galena Signal in Company 4 and a 1884 contract with Atchison Topeka Santa Fe Railroad. C. C. Steinbrenner presented tables showing a 70 percent average lubrication cost reduction on main lines. Rosenthal challenged the method, claiming costs were based on invoice price rather than thousand mile runs. The testimony suggested estimates came from railroad books, not Galena records.
