Roosevelt bolt in Nebraska rocks Fremont editor
Washington notes Ross L. Hammond postmaster of Fremont and editor of The Fremont Tribune repudiates the Nebraska State Convention’s pro Roosevelt Cuban policy. Washington analysts see his move as part of a larger Republican plan to humiliate the President and affect 1908 nomination prospects. Millard regrets the course but says Hammond controls his own editorials. The Slid Congress District, now Democratic, could hinge on Hammond’s actions and Hammond may resign to seek martyrdom, while Nebraska remains pivotal to Roosevelt’s standing.
