Theodore Roosevelt launched a movement for a new national party with delegates at Orchestra Hall. Plans aim to nominate Roosevelt on a Progressive platform, seeking to unite disaffected Republicans and Progressive Democrats, with a Baltimore convention possible to split the Democratic vote.
Taft won re nomination with 561 votes while Roosevelt trailed with 107 and La Follette 41 at the Chicago convention. The platform backed by Fairbanks passed 666 to 396 amid Roosevelt supporters declaring present not voting. Roosevelt urged unity but signaled a third party effort with backing from Perkins and Pinchot.
Chicago June 22 delegates at the Republican National Convention refused to indorse the platform. The roll call showed varied support by state with New York California Indiana Illinois and others pledging yes while several states withheld. The tally reflected a mixed reception of the proposed platform among party delegates.
Alphonso Sherburne aged seventy five, longtime janitor of the Hotel Agassis in Boston, plans retirement after saving $150000 through a friendship with Major Henry J. Higginson. He owns Osceola stock now worth about $126500, a home in Roslindale, and a Stoneham farm. He cautions youth to save and avoid wasteful spending.
