Subways and Waterfront Plans Shadow Brooklyn Meeting
At yesterday's Sinking Fund Commission meeting Mayor and Controller mourned a $2,850.09 subway start in Fourth Avenue while Dock Commissioner Spooner sought condemnation authority for the East River bulkhead between Piers 52 and 33. Spooner said the property was needed and would cost about something. The mayor and Controller expressed bleak feelings that a subway would force major cutbacks. An amendment to extend waterfront docks between 2nd and 6th streets in South Brooklyn would lengthen the docks by about 2 feet, aiming to create the world’s longest. Alderman Sullivan also weighed in on leasing rooms at 6 Lafayette Street for the 1st District Municipal Court at $15.59 yearly for five years. The public hearing on June 3 was discussed as a possible date to expedite a decision if the Fourth Avenue subway proceeds.
