Park Commissioner's win ends use of trees as hitching posts
Park Commissioner Willcox reports success in preventing tunnel sub contractors from tying ropes to city trees along the subway route. Last night the final guy rope attached to an upper West Side tree was removed by Bradley, a sub-contractor. Willcox says the new tree planting law gives custody of city trees to the Park Department and empowers any citizen to arrest anyone injuring a shade tree. He notes many trees were damaged by cables and root exposure, but crews now box roots and enforce compliance.
