Steers Run Aground in Shark Stalking Shipboard Stampede
In Havana on June 7 hundreds of fine steers aboard the Ameri gam steamship St. Charles stampeded breaking corrals and plunging into the sea where sharks awaited them. About 190 carcasses were found in the hold prompting sanitary officials to order the ship to sea and cast the meat overboard. The crew was terrified as tugs assisted and the ship neared port. Also noted is a claim that about 20,000,000 feet of lumber are used yearly to make clothespins, with a shift toward 4 inch clothespins to save timber.
