Oil may supplant coal in city power plants

The Tribune reported that the Interborough Rapid Transit Co plans to feed its future power plant with Texas oil, following Morse Iron Works and Drydock Co adopting oil instead of coal. Business leaders foresee potential major power cost reductions, industrial benefits, and a possible drop in coal prices if oil proves cheaper. A fuel oil fleet and shifts by other power users could reshape local industry and air quality, though a regular oil supply and tankers are needed before large-scale use.
