Immigration Officials Attack Barge Office Probe
Washington reports say a committee's unfavorable findings on the Barge Office prompted sharp reactions from New York immigration staff. Assistant McSweeney called the inquiry an execution, while Registry Clerk Lederhilger welcomed full investigation amid division between Republican Fitchie and Democrat McSweeney and most holdover staff.

Consolidated Exchange Sales activity is reported at the stock exchange with figures showing trading momentum. Market participants note increased volume and price movement across key listings as investors reassess holdings and sector prospects.
Market Summary Shows Stable Uplift Before Late Decline
The stock market remained largely quiet aside from firmer prices early and steady demand for American stocks on the London Exchange. Atchison’s dividend boost lifted confidence in investments, while Sugar Refining held its basis despite profit taking. Afternoon trading turned heavy with selling of Sugar, dull interest, and looming political uncertainty. Despite gloom, Atchison maintained a 5 percent preferred stock dividend. rail earnings comparisons to last year loom large for railroad outlook. St Paul earnings from early June show substantial gains over 1897 and 1898, tempering expectations for this summer, as wheat movements slow and comparisons to extraordinary prior results shape sentiment.
