Big Four for Kansas City Murphy and Van Wyock

The Democratic State Convention at the Academy of Music chose delegates to the National Convention, elected presidential electors, and a new State Committee. It remained largely featureless with a protracted platform debate between silver faction and opponents, ending with concessions and a prearranged anti imperialism, anti trust, and mild bimetallism stance plus instruction for Bryan. Delegates at large were Hill, Murphy Jr, Croker, and Van Wyck, amid jeers aimed at Ice Trust connected delegates.

Delegates filled the hall amid silk banners and bunting as cigars were banned and doors opened to ticket holders. Ex Senator Murphy and Thomas Grady appeared. Carroll faced hecklers while the Ice Trust chorus rose. The 1896 era platform battled for bimetallism, empire critique, and a Bryan nomination, with Danforth’s address drawing strong reactions as the crowd pressed for 16 to 1 and unity among New York Democrats.

Democratic Delegates Restore Order At New York Convention

John Norton named temporary chair as factional clashes erupt over Chicago platform and state committee selections. Eliot Danforth wins permanent chair, with speeches attacking Platt and McKinley era policies and calls for Bryan era reforms amid noisy protests and a chaotic session in New York.

Stoker pushed a Chicago platform reaffirmation but was ruled out of order. David B. Hill entered to cheers and hisses amid a wary calm and band music.

Appellate Divisions Reverses Mandamus Against Coffey

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court reversed a mandamus order directing the Democratic General Committee of Kings County to reinstate Senator Michael J. Coffey. Justices Goodrich and others held Coffey failed to prove a legal right to reinstatement, noting the committee’s power to expel members under its rules and regulations. The decision states the committee acts as the instrument for party plans and elections, and lacking a right to expel would undermine the party structure. The petition shows no grounds for mandamus. The court reversed the lower order.
