Riot Amid Anti-Conscription Demonstrations In New York

Sporadic anti-conscription riots erupted in New York City with 10 000 at Hunt's Point Palace The Bronx and crowds at Rutgers Square City Hall Park and Independence Hall Osborn Street and Pitkin Avenue. Police Guardsmen and Home Defence League beat back rioters causing numerous arrests.

March on City Hall Protest Grows Into Draft Riot

A nine to eleven man and woman East Side meeting in Rutgers Square last night escalated from an antihigh cost of living demonstration to an anti conscription riot in City Hall Park. Speakers including Ara Neuman-Zilberman and Mrs Anva Pastor touched the draft law as police halted the meeting. A crowd marched via Henry Street toward Chatham Square, swelling to about 1000 near the Municipal Building, with women leading the charge and shouting against conscription and high food costs.

France Names Joffre To Aid Gen Pershing

France names Marshal Joffre to assist Gen Pershing in organizing American participation in the war. Lt Col Fabry and Lt de Tossanas aid remain with the French War Commission to the United States and will continue with the marshal. Upon Pershing’s arrival in Paris he will be greeted by M Viviani and Joffre and escorted through central streets.
