Local Banks Move To Form National Currency Body

Local bankers yester day began steps to organize a national currency association under the emergency currency law. The Clearing House committee discussed the plan and will meet later in the week to decide how to coordinate banks in New York and Brooklyn. The aim is to obtain a general expression of opinion from all banks before any action. Banks expect no need to issue emergency currency but seek readiness. One banker warned that New York banks would be criticized for not preparing during peacetime. The law now imposes a 1 percent interest charge on all government deposits in national banks except disbursing officers and certain customs accounts, affecting nearly all but about 10 to 15 million dollars of the 150 million on deposit.
