Downtown land sale and big office project takes shape
One of the season’s largest downtown deals was the sale by Charles F. Noyes Company and Robert T. Mc Lusty of four buildings on John Street and William Street to the Golden Hill Building Company led by Henry Thompson. The leasehold runs eighty four years on ground owned by the Reformed Dutch Church of America, with a new office structure planned to be ready May 1, 168. Ground rent and building costs are about 2.5 million dollars. The Golden Hill company is backed by figures connected with Globe and Rutgers and other insurers, who will be tenants. Meanwhile Albert B. Ashforth arranged the sale of two four story stone front houses on East 534th Street, likely to be replaced by four mercantile buildings. The Port Morris Bronx area near 88th Street and Southern Boulevard is growing as a manufacturing hub with about thirty five factories, including a new piano string factory for Will iam G. Scheff, a Chicago firm, to be a three story plus basement building costing about 1200 dollars. Architect Albert E. Davis designed the project with future vertical expansion planned.
