Paul Morton Secretary of the Navy plans to leave Washington on July 1 and move to New York to head the Metropolitan interests subway project with Thomas F. Ryan. A new company backed by the Metropolitans will be formed with large capital to build and control the future subway contracts, while the Interborough system remains entrenched. S. L. F. Deyo joins the Metropolitan staff as chief engineer, and John B. McDonald will act as official contractor for the new independent firm.
The five French musicians were admitted to the union after Walter Damrosch agreed to a $1000 fine for not adequately advertising vacancies in New York. He will appear before the next AFM convention. The dispute involved protests by local musicians and the national federation.

Dr Goebel head of the German department at Stanford University for thirteen years was dismissed amid dissatisfaction with his teaching. He applied for sabbatical on half pay but declined to resign after an insulting letter to Dr Jordan. Goebel, a 1882 graduate of Spabingen, had studied at Lotpele and Johns Hopkins and was decorated by the German Emperor.
London dispatch from a Russian captain aboard the Admiral Nakhimoff describes a May 27 battle near Tsu Island and Liancourt Rocks. The ship struck a mine or torpedo, sank rapidly with most of 600 crew lost. survivors escaped by lifeboat and fisher boat. Japanese forces, led by Kamimura and Uriu, pressed the assault, with the Vladimir Monomach surrendering and the Kamtchatky crippled, sinking after a volley of shells and torpedoes.
Washington dispatch summarizes Tokio reports on the last naval clash. It notes slight fleet damage for Japan, no battleships lost, but three torpedo boats sunk and about two hundred Japanese casualties. Admiral Togo authorized release of captured officers' parole and a Russian officer parley details.

An anarchist threw a bomb at midnight as King Alfonso and President Loubet rode past the opera. The blast wounded five bystanders and several cavalry, killed one horse, and caused chaos but the King and President escaped unharmed. Police arrested the assailant and two others suspected of involvement.
