Hearst formally enters the race for the Democratic nomination for governor. Upstate delegates resist Hearst while Tammany's Murphy and McCooey weigh backing. Hearst rep Luke O Reilly says his candidacy stands regardless of convention endorsement.
Two aviation students learning to fly at Chatham training grounds reportedly dropped sandbags on a German submarine off Orleans. The sub had destroyed a tanker and sunk three barges before being attacked in an aerial sortie undertaken on the students own responsibility. Naval reports had varied earlier in the day.
Colonel Theodore Roosevelt refused the Republican nomination for Governor of New York stating he cannot be a candidate due to dedication to war related duties. He cited his focus on national and international issues, particularly the war and peacemaking, as preventing him from serving as governor at this time.
DoJ agents arrested seventeen officers and employees from fourteen concerns on charges of fraud bribery and conspiracy tied to raincoat supply contracts for Pershing's troops. The raid, directed by Charles F. De Woody and Huston Thompson with army and navy cooperation, targeted firms including Sydemen Rubber Pottell Raincoat and Hanover & Rosenthal. Continued on page five.
General Pershing visited American Red Cross hospitals in Paris to commend wounded soldiers. He spoke to wounded men in wards, thanked doctors and nurses, and said the American people are proud of you. He asked Major James H. Perkins to relay his message to each patient.
The British and French fronts report heavy fighting near Soissons Jaulgonne and Chateau Thierry with Allied forces holding most positions. Prisoners official counts near 25 000 with Americans contributing over 6 000. German losses and stores abandoned cited as over 175 000. Gas shells and river crossings figure in the engagements as Crown Prince’s troops press reserves.
A Copenhagen dispatch reports Germany criticizes Lithuania’s selection of Duke William of Urach as King Medove. The Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung says Germany demanded monarchy creation follow German wishes and will block independent Crown decisions. William, 54, head of the Urach line, is a Württemberg lieutenant with twelve children and a Bavaria-born wife, Duchess Amelia, who died in 1912.
Allied forces pressed the Aisne Marne salient with heavy Franco American assaults while British and Crown Prince Ruprecht reinforcements aided the French. Casualties exceed 175000 on the German side, with 25000 prisoners taken and German retreats ordered to Fere en Tardenois as the Allies widen gains along the Soissons and Rheims front.
On the Aisne Marne front dated July 22, German forces cling to a line south of Soissons while American and Allied forces press the offensive. The Americans cut the narrow gauge railway to Chateau Thierry and have taken two more towns north of the Marne, improving Allied lines and disrupting German communications.
