Plumber Murphy held on extortion charge
Charles Murphy of Keefe and Murphy, 1154 Lexington Avenue, freed on $2,000 bail after arraignment in the Tombs on a case of attempting to extort a builder by threats to call out striking plumbers. Builder Leo R. Bing, of 1038 Fifth Avenue, said Murphy demanded $2,000 for returning workers to three Riverside Drive projects and gaining preferred status on a new Bing contract. Murphy claimed 200 of the $2,000 would go to union committees. Bing offered cash, which was refused. Murphy allegedly warned the transaction was illegal but proceeded. Magistrate Corrigan set adjournment to Friday. James M. Osborne represented Murphy.
