Chicago report notes rail unions push for fare and freight increases even after the $400 million wage boost to over 1.4 million workers. Officials hint that strike threats fade but rate demands press policy, with freight and passenger hikes debated and state and federal boards weighing the cost of living and wage adjustments.
Philadelphia reports the Pennsylvania Railroad will honor the wage award under the 1920 Transportation Act and Railroad Labor Board ruling. It expects the Interstate Commerce Commission to consider the increase in pending rate cases to enable the railroad to meet higher costs.
Washington dispatch reports railroad executives will ask the Interstate Commerce Commission to raise passenger fares by one half cent per mile to cover higher wage costs after the Railroad Labor Board award. They project net gains from various rate increases, aiming to close a $600 million annual shortfall.
A three story frame house at 611 Summit Avenue Jersey City caught fire after an alcohol explosion in the saloon on the first floor. Mrs Polski and her ten year old daughter Leokadya perished inside the ruin while two younger children died at City Hospital after firefighters recovered them. The husband escaped. firemen saved a three year old girl and a one year old boy but both died soon after. The blaze confined to the single building near Five Corners as crowds faced police restraints.
In Columbus on July 20 Governor Cox charged Republicans are building a massive campaign fund. He pledged the Democratic platform as a promissory note and urged full public accounting of campaign finances. George H. White was named national chairman to succeed Homer Cummings and will oversee the campaign with Roosevelt and Cox to be notified later.
London dispatch reports Britain threatens to break off trade with Russia if Soviet forces advance in Poland. Cabinet notes the Bolsheviks may seek direct Polish overtures while considering an armistice, and France backs Poland as Mille r vows allied support amid Bolshevik resistance.
