A dramatic heat wave peak with 57 deaths in the forenoon gave way to a sharp drop as temperatures plunged 10 to 22 degrees. Upstate cities faced fierce storms with wind and lightning, and the metropolitan area reported 101 deaths in one day as rain fell in some parts of New York City.
