A benzine tank apparently ruptured above Opladen causing an airship disaster. Five German aeronauts died in the crash as their bodies were found badly mangled. The deaths were widely known to fellow airmen and listed among recent aeronautical fatalities.
A sequence of fatal airship accidents is reported with the Erbsloeh disaster near Opladen. Oscar Erbsloeh, renowned German aeronaut, dies with four companions after a benzine tank rupture and envelope failure. Other noted names include Hoeppe, Kranz, Toelle, and Picke as observers describe a fog bound, explosive end to the flight.
A man barges into an Orange saloon shouting that President Roosevelt owes him 150000 and threatens to slay him if unpaid. He claims benefit from 1000 owed by Nova Scotians, then drinks a beer and exits, citing fear of the nearby Orange Mountains. No one harmed.
Wakefield Mass July 13 In a remarkable display of skill Corporal Perry Scofield of Company E 5th Massachusetts Medford nearly doubled the world 500 yard record at the Bay State rifle range scoring 116 consecutive bull’s-eyes the prior record was sixty held by Captain Stephen Wise inspector of small arms practice 6th Massachusetts
Miss Louise McKenzie of The Bronx dangled from a moving Ferris wheel at Nason Point Park during a Bronx Settlement Workers outing. Watchman John A. Parell climbed to the top, steadied the car, and pulled her inside before the wheel was brought down safely.
George and Metaxias Naskos awoke to a burglar crawling from under their bed at their furnished room 476 Sixth Avenue. The intruder pistol whipped them then rifled a trunk and grabbed $4495 before fleeing. The Naskos brothers, recent Mauretania arrivals, reported the crime and gave police a name for the suspect.
Stockbridge Massachusetts July 13 Pryor Van Horn Tobeys chauffeur drove a new automobile into an iron bridge over the Housatonic River tearing the tonneau and tossing the party into the water. Tobey a New York broker and his wife and son Alien were not injured and returned to New Rochelle. Tobey refused to prosecute the chauffeur.
In Pittsburg on July 13 a car owned by Dr. W. A. Arnold of Tarentum Penn left unattended near his office began a wild run. It hurdled curbstones cleared streets and plunged down a twenty foot embankment where it struck a box car end. Spectators, puzzled, said the auto acted as if bewitched.
An owl collided with electrical wiring at the Central Colorado Power Company plant, shorting the system and plunging Boulder into darkness overnight. The bird’s claw was burned off and the owl was found today near Boulder Canyon under the Hudson River line heading.
On July 13, Pennsylvania Railroad conductors trainmen and yardmen east of Pittsburgh Erie and Buffalo voted to strike if no agreement is reached on wages and working conditions. 1,863 conductors favored and 448 opposed. trainmen 10,918 in favor 965 against. Conference with General Manager Myers planned for next morning.
A delay caused by a defective alarm box allowed a blaze in a six story brick tenement at 162 Henry Street to gain headway risking nearly a hundred residents. The second floor fire, started in David Shavel's rooms, spread upward while patrolmen Funk Gueris and Sergeant Brady evacuated tenants. Mrs Becky Kaplan and son Isadore were rescued on the fourth floor. Gustave Beck, Jacob Schultz aided frightened women down the fire escape, including Mary Levine with her newborn.
Lord Charles Beresford urged a war staff to safeguard Britain and trade routes, criticizing Admiralty funding and Dreadnought construction. Kipling introduced him at the Cecil Club dinner in London, where Conservatives cheered his call for organizational reform in the navy.
A distressing scene unfolds as three bulldogs kept in adjoining cells at the East 51st Street police station disrupt officers with loud howling and snarling. Fresh from Florida, two young alligators are regaled in the National Press Club with lumps of ice left in the bottom of glasses. The gators’ initial delight gave way to dumb appeals for more, as their stomachs felt cooling and their eyes showed surprise.
Mrs Henry Clews wife of Henry Clews of New York was rescued at Bailey's Beach Newport after venturing too far from shore in rough surf. Fellow summer resident Mrs Clarence W Dolan of Philadelphia reached her first and helped bring her to shore before beach patrol arrived. no injuries reported.
Patrolman John A. Hanold of Bedford Avenue station reported four men beating a man in the American Sugar Refining Company refinery Brooklyn labor dispute. Hanold was struck and his helmet torn as crowd jeered. Fellow officer O Brien and Dr McAllister treated injuries and the suspects fled. Police suspect the assault was staged to trap Hanold.
United States and Labrador postage stamps with a face value of 400000 dollars were seized by federal authorities in Montreal. The stamps, in 2 cent 5 cent and 1 dollar denominations, were found in the pawnbroker’s possession after he said he bought them at an unclaimed property auction at a local railroad station.
London July U Sir Edward Sassoon's bill requires all passenger vessels at British ports to have wireless systems capable of 10 mile transmission. Ships may be British or foreign and a $1000 penalty is set for noncompliance.
Police tracing American singer Belle Elmore known as Crippen uncovered a battered body buried in the cellar of 59 Hilldrop Crescent North London. The house was deserted as detectives seek her husband Hawley Crippen American dentist. Identity of the body not yet confirmed.
Owosso celebrates Detroit reunion with Daniel O Connell the world s oldest Elk age ten. Ernest Gould Owosso Creamery superintendent suffers rib fracture after Pike fishing fall. He is bitten by a water spider causing blood poisoning and arm swelling. A bicycle accident with a wire fence injures his thumb and left eye prompting him to skip the reunion.
Ex president declares he has taken no stand for insurgents or regulars in the New York Republican party and aims to see both sides on state and national issues. He met with Woodruff and Fowler and noted Wadsworth and Hughes views, while stressing finding the best governor candidate.
