Duncan places third in discus as the United States experiences a controversial 400 metre trials with a disqualification but no formal protest is filed. The Americans clinch the overall title amid a flurry of track unrest and decision readings.
United States athletes clinched the track and field championship at the Stockholm Olympic Games by sweeping the running broad jump and 11 metre hurdles, adding twelve points to reach 112. Fred W. Kelly won the 1501-1 seconds hurdles, with J. J. Wendell second and Martin W. Hawkins third. Albert L. Gutterson broke the Olympic broad jump record with 24 feet 11 inches, while A. H. Alvah J Gibbs a Yonkers broker aged fifty killed himself in his home after his wife had died there fifteen days earlier. He found his wife dead June 27 in the bathroom. In the cellar he attempted to shoot himself, then went to a drug store to buy acid. A policeman stayed with him overnight. The body was found six hours after his return from New York.
Richard Benn was ordered to serve three months in the Allegheny County Workhouse after an assault and battery charge brought by Mina Roth. The couple, who had a license to marry, were in a playful quarrel when Benn twisted Kate Roths arm, provoking hysterics and leading to the warrant and arrest.
Chicago July 12 Henry Watterson of Louisville declines to utter William Jennings Bryan's name saying he will not defile his mouth by speaking it. He declined to discuss politics while in Chicago to address a society gathering and left reporters with a sharp retort.
Edward Weller an advertising solicitor was sentenced by Municipal Judge Caverls to thirty days in the workhouse for stealing cents from a carpenter's overalls. The punishment, described as one day of labor for each cent, reflects a strict one-for-one penalty.
Telegraph report from Sea Girt New Jersey details Governor Wilson's four hour meeting with Hudspeth Me Combs and Daniels on forming a national committee with McCombs as chairman. The Rev. S. Ross McClements pastor of the First Presbyterian Church Asbury Park was fatally injured while attempting to board a moving train at Allenhurst station. Dr Henry M Bennett assisted and he was taken to Long Branch Hospital where little hope remained.

Tetlow, hotel proprietor and Tetlow Distilling Co. owner, offers good wages, private room and dining, no laundry or milking, porch and lawn, flowers, a weekly seventeen mile note ride, at his Stone House summer home on the National Pike.
Washington July 12 Postmaster General Hitchcock after the Cabinet meeting today paused before the White House to chat with a reporter. A friendly honey bee landed on his hat as he swatted at the heat and quipped I know a bee doesn't belong there.
Striking seamen firemen and longshoremen in New York lashed out causing hospital visits as riots spread from waterfront parades to the Tenth avenue and 90th street area. Police arrested several amid clashes near Morgan Line piers and along Eleventh avenue with numerous injuries including a butchered eye and a knife wound.
In a quirky move the town board halted the electric current for the night to avoid spending public treasury funds during a visit by millions of lightning bugs. The decision relied on the glow bugs providing enough light to meet needs.
