A city census led by Mike Galvin reports Chinatown’s Chinese population has fallen from about three thousand to just over one thousand as of last night. Gambling raids and removal of disorderly women accompany a mass exodus, with landlords and merchants shifting toward Italian tenants and smaller shops.
John P. Parker, a cotton expert, predicts prices will rise and the season’s crop will be cut short by dry Texas weather and heavy rains in the eastern belt. He cites potential weevil damage and favorable conditions elsewhere, forecasting the crop between present levels and higher prices if conditions worsen.
Sir Caspar Purdon Clarke director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art denies retirement reports. He says his leave of absence has been extended due to ill health, though he is much improved. The note from London reports his health improving and his duties postponed.
In Pittsburg on July 11 eighteen thousand coal miners employed by the Pittsburg Coal Company plan a sympathy strike with tinplate workers. The move threatens hardship to United States Steel Corporation mills reliant on Pittsburg coal under a twenty five year contract. Prospective strikers argue rivals filling the Pittsburg contract could close other mines as a consequence.
A Gouverneur message reports that during a heavy wind and rain storm thousands of small but perfect frogs fell in Utica area. Frogs covered sidewalks on Grove street making walking difficult and slick rails along the Rome Watertown and Ogdensburg division of the New York Central Railroad reduced train speeds for about half a mile.
At Manasquan cornerstone ceremonies Bishop James McFaul of Trenton condemned college higher critics and asserted Catholic doctrine accepts the entire Bible. He argued state schools threaten families, praised church science compatibility, and noted gifts from Denis Sweeny, Martin Maloney, and Mrs Duffey for church furniture.
Detectives brought John Hudson Merrill from Boston on larceny charges after he allegedly stole a suit of clothes worth 50 dollars and a 25 dollar Panama hat from Frank G. Two men claiming to be Anthony Lang and Thomas Gordon faced night court in $1000 bail each on charges of attempted highway robbery. Police say a woman complainant was grabbed near the Dyckman street subway, prompting officers Fealner and Fitzgerald to pursue. A mob of about a thousand ball players and friends later assaulted the officers near the station, sending them bruised to the platform while guarding the suspects until reinforcements arrived. The woman complainant vanished in the confusion.

A bomb shaped pipe exploded in the yard behind No. 15 Hudson Avenue drawing alarm in Brooklyn’s Italian area. Alphonse Sacriscan twelve years old of 301 Hudson Avenue admitted tossing it after finding the device. Patrolman Owens identified him. detectives detained him briefly but released him as not being charged.
Sydney July 11. Mayor D H Melwood called in Halifax troops to restore order at the Inverness colliery owned by MacKenzie and Mann after a three hundred person crowd including Belgians attacked striking workers from the United Mine Workers of America. One worker hurt. Royal Canadian Regiment guards stationed as fears of further trouble persist. No disturbances reported at Glace Bay mines.
Col Alexander A. Pope, pioneer maker of bicycles and autos, is said to be seriously ill at his Cohasset summer home. Friends knew his health faltered, but not that he was fifty percent weak as his condition suggests. His nervous system suffered a shock when Pope Manufacturing Co. went into receivership years ago.
Albert Fisher a 47 year old machinist of 554 West 54th Street and Joseph Weber a 44 year old blacksmith of 364 West 36th Street were drowned off Hunt's Point as their motor boat party returned from a fishing trip. Weber's ten year old son was rescued. Fisher's body was recovered after their rowboat swamped in the swell. The wives stood on the landing and watched as the men and boy struggled in the water.
A severe hurricane struck Panama last night causing extensive damage. The electric plant failed, plunging the city into darkness as Maria Guerrero performed at the National Theatre. Residents sought shelter in churches amid disrupted telegraph lines and uncertain inland impact. Two government steamers were sent along the coast.
A violent tornado struck Ortonville Minnesota at 4 15 PM damaging a sidetrack box cars depot and nearby buildings. Three Italian laborers were killed and nineteen fatally injured while the town of Big Stone S D reported destroyed houses and the death of John Degriff a leading citizen. Estimated loss reaches 140000. Other towns PanA Illinois and Abilene Kansas reported minor damage with no deaths.
Patchogue New York July 11 Townsend Gerity ninety three and his wife Cynthia eighty four were burned to death in their bed in a house partly destroyed by fire. Peter Zeetkalazitch owner of the house and ground floor resident is arrested facing investigation as fire authorities deem incendiary and note a possible robbery. Police say fifty dollars found on him. he was outside the house with the door locked when flames were discovered. Zeetkalazitch says he slept until about 2 45 am and smelled smoke. Firemen arrived fifteen minutes after alarm, interior a furnace. Insurance covers damages of about 500 dollars. Coroner held Zeetkalazitch. Authorities seek the Geritys son but lack of address hampers contact.
Arthur H. Mulholland, reputed to have a fortune over $250,000, has joined the Philadelphia police as a sub patrolman at 225 dollars a day. He has spent days on reserve night duty and patrol wagon, and today received a regular beat in a residential district.
St Louis notes river racing may return with Commodore Henry W. Leype of the Alton challenging Captain W H Thorwegen of the City of Providence to a race for sums from 1000 to 50000 dollars. Thorwegen accepts once wagers are placed and the race is arranged.
After the Rosedale landed at East 138th Street, a clash erupted between Catholic Benevolent Legion members and a Connecticut Naval Reserve detachment from Bridgeport. Three men were arrested for felonious assault, while Walter Mitchell of Bridgeport was injured and hospitalized. Connecticut police coordinated with New York authorities to arrest suspects when the ship docked.

In Kansas City at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church celebration on July 11 a fireworks accident wounded many. Two men were killed and another lost both legs as a parcel of fireworks exploded. Several thousand Italian attendees were present when the incident occurred.
