President submits peace treaty to Senate urging ratification of League with warning of world heartbreak if rejected. Reported progress from R-34 shows 1,000 miles covered in 15 hours. estimated 70 hours total for voyage. Strong westerly winds propel the dirigible at times an 80 mile pace. aim to reach goal early tomorrow.
The Tribune receives the first newspaper dispatch from the airship R-34 returning from New York to London. Rex Durrant relays messages detailing speed, wind effects, and gratitude for American aid as the British dirigible nears Scotland. Weather centers report storms near Newfoundland and Ontario with strong westerlies expected.
Ten thousand plus outside and fifteen thousand inside Madison Square Garden cheered De Valera and hissed Wilson and England during a United Irish Societies rally. Superseded by Irish officials and clergy, De Valera spoke as Frank Walsh and Edward F. Dunne listened. protests and cheers filled the hall in a vivid political scene.
Britain and France renewed representations to the United States on Mexico. They urged putting Mexico on her feet so she could resume debt payments and protect foreign lives and property. British and French investors hold significant Mexican bonds and bank investments, with allegations of looting by the government under the guise of loans.
ST JOHN'S July 10 Two crewmen died and two were injured when the Allan liner Grampian collided with an iceberg off Cape Race. The ship with 750 passengers and 350 crew reached port for repairs after a bowward collision that spared the hull below the waterline. Passengers mostly stayed calm as captains steered for Newfoundland amid a gale. two stewards were killed, another steward and a stoker injured, bodies not yet recovered.
President Wilson spoke to newspaper men and Democratic Senators outlining his stance on treaty issues. He insisted demobilization await peace proclamation after ratification, and that trade with Germany should resume, limited only by ships and credits. He warned reservations to the league covenant could cause trouble and argued Article X is essential for a meaningful league.
President Wilson outlines the June 28 1919 treaty with Germany as a world settlement and describes the United States role in the Paris peace conference. He praises American troops and ideals, notes the burden of leadership, and signals forthcoming Senate deliberations and continued briefing. Continued on page four.
