Heat ushers a record day with extreme highs across the city and nearby areas. Officials monitor river moderation over the Mississippi and expect relief to spread toward the Seaboard. Death tallies rise in the city and are tallied elsewhere as forecasts warn of continuing heat and humidity through the day.
New York endured the hottest day of the year with 92 degrees by noon and rising humidity. Nine heat deaths are reported in the metropolitan district including three in Brooklyn and three in Manhattan, plus multiple prostrations. Authorities note showers and cooler weather forecast to relieve the heat.

A State Department report from the American Legation at Peking notes the issue was cited in Washington in July.
The United States submarine Salmon sailed from Quincy Massachusetts on July 5 and arrived at Hamilton Bermuda at 1 am after a rough sea. She lay to until 5 am took a pilot and reached Hamilton three hours later. A four-horse stage bound for El Portal fell one hundred feet into the Merced River. One man and three women were seriously injured. others and the driver escaped by clinging to rocks. Two horses were killed. Injured were taken to the Hotel El Portal. one woman remained unconscious for hours. No identities or injury details were available at night.
