Ocean City New Jersey June 10 special Chaplain Rose retired Navy saved three bathing girls from drowning as winds blew and tide pulled out. The crowd watched while lifeguards finally pulled them and the chaplain from the water after the children clung to his neck and drained his strength.
London report says Duchess of Albany will accompany King Edward on his Scotland visit and that her betrothal to Lord Rosebery will be announced during the royal party’s travels or on their return.

Bermuda reports three Boer prisoners escaped detention overnight from Darrell's Island. They swam to the mainland, prompting a manhunt and reviews of security at the camp.
London July 19 Lord Roberts orders rifle first in training for all British service arms. Sword lance and bayonet drills are abolished. A cavalry board finds the sword largely useless in war though a different sword pattern will stay as part of cavalry gear.
Shanghai July 10. A new Boxer movement forms per Chinese intelligence from Sian Fu. Pu Chun heir apparent and other Prince Tuan family members have joined Prince Tuan on Mongolia borders. Indications build that Prince Tuan plans to march against foreigners with tacit approval of the Empress Dowager.
London July 11 The Admiralty ordered 169 navy ships to begin manoeuvres on July 29 The two main fleets will contend for control of the English Channel during the exercise.
Fifty more insurgents surrendered to Col Theodore J. Wint in Albay Province. A mobbing of two friars at Calastao Pangasinan prompted a street demonstration in Cebu against a friar preaching in a church, but no violence occurred. Arthur Ferguson, ex secretary to the Philippine Commission, is named secretary to Civil Governor Taft. Goynechen, former inspector of Manila native police, has been arrested for embezzling police benefit funds.
Mail dispatches from Moscow report two well known banks at the brink with paper quoted at a third of value. Their failure would ruin many commercial houses and trigger collapses of shaky concerns. A Finance Ministry ukase requiring public companies to lodge surplus capital with imperial or first class banks is deemed wise.
A Gloucester fishing vessel named Winona was run down off the Grand Banks by an unknown steamer. Eighteen crewmen drowned and two were saved by the Newfoundland schooner Burin. The Burin has not yet landed the survivors.
Washington July 10 The long standing dispute over indemnity from Turkey ends with the payment of 95000 to United States Minister at Constantinople Mr Leishman. The Turkish government deposited the funds in the Ottoman Imperial Bank to be distributed by the State Department to claimants. The settlement acknowledges Turkish regard for the United States and restores relations.
Oscar F. Spate obtains a temporary injunction from Justice McAdam preventing the Park Board from rescinding his pay chair contract in New York City parks. He claims Commissioner Clausen promised to revoke only to preserve public peace and argues chairs benefit working people, offering five cent seats and an annual fee to the city, with readings of his formal statement defending the plan against critics.
An annual long distance race will start in August with ships Acme and Brilliant contesting Yokohama via the China Sea. Acme, Maine built, 333 feet, 2987 tons, four masts. Brilliant, Glasgow built, 375 feet, 3609 tons, water ballast. Captains Laurence and Cowlinshaw bring seasoned command to the pair.
Joseph Levesque once a City District Bank bookkeeper in Montreal was arrested in Brooklyn after a decade long manhunt. He allegedly stole 20000 dollars while employed there and fled December 1 1491 with an accomplice. He lived under the alias J C L De Romprex at 4 Middagh Street and admitted being the wanted man. He will be sent to Canada after formalities.
London reports A. H. Hummel is out of danger with no skull fracture after a shock incident. He rests comfortably and is expected to be moved from the hospital tomorrow, with no complications reported and recovery proceeding rapidly per the house surgeon.

Columbus dispatch reports the Democratic State Convention nominated James Kilbourne for Governor Anthony Howells for Lieutenant Governor Joseph Hidy for Supreme Court Clerk Harry B Young for Supreme Court Attorney General M B McCarthy and R P Alshire as state officers James Bryan and his platforms were rejected the convention backed the Kansas City plank over Bryan and money questions despite a speech in support of the resolution being voted down.
The convention's decision process rejected Bryan imagery as only six of 950 delegates supported the Kansas City plank. A banner bearing Bryan’s portrait was blocked amid jeers while Kilbourne’s nomination drew playful derision. Monnett’s defeat as Attorney-General and anti-trust prosecutions were noted, with Ohio Democrats reaffirming strict taxation equality and public reporting on corporations.
