Government and civic groups mobilize against moving pictures of the Jeffries Johnson fight as 25,000,000 people are affected. The New York City episode at American Music Hall ends in jeers and claims of fakery.
Koplin reports Mayor Gaynor told New York contact he will support Governor Harmon for President and that Ohio Democrats would back Gaynor if Harmon loses re election. Gaynor added he is not a candidate and would support Harmon if asked.
United States Marshal Edson Bishop could not collect part of a 222000 judgment awarded to D. E. Loewe & Son of Danbury in a seven year old case. Striking batters, following AFL guidance, vow never to pay. Walter Merritt plans an appeal to the U S Circuit Court in New York this September and will seek steps against banks to free defendant funds. The judgment, tripled under the Sherman anti trust act, was the largest ever in Connecticut.
Thousands of minors were barred from work in dangerous trades by a Massachusetts Board of Health order. Printing, dust and gas hazards dominate the list, issued under Chapter 404 of current statutes. The state child labor committee contrasted conditions with historic English coal mines.
In Philadelphia on July 9 a U S District Court judge fined $1,000 each to National Frame Company of Philadelphia Newark River Works and Newark Tube and Metal Works for illegally combining to restrain trade. The defendants pleaded guilty arguing the act harmed consumers little. the court imposed penalties.
Miss Mary Powers of Riverside Drive and Miss Eda Bigger of Maysville Ky were struck by a Harlem River Railroad train at the Bronxville crossing while returning to New York after lunch with Miss Mara Pyatt. Powers suffered a crushed leg amputated and remains unconscious, Bigger sustained multiple fractures and a severe scalp wound but expected to recover. the crossing is noted as especially dangerous with prior fatalities and calls for grade abolition.
The will of Lewis R. Veazie of Malden, who died June 23, filed in Middlesex Probate Court, leaves his wife and three children $1 each. He notes his wife receives 100 cents more than she deserves and leaves the major estate to Miss Susie H. Roberts of Maiden for her long friendship in sickness and health.
Thomas J. Foster of Brooklyn survived a capsizing off Fire Island after a rowboat with three men lost an oar. Foster and a companion stayed afloat as others drifted. a oil tank steamer Richard K. Cole spotted them at dawn and rescued them, then ferried them to Detroit. Foster telegraphed home and returned, while his friend remained hospitalized in Detroit.
As a stifling heat wave hit New York with 91 degrees by early afternoon and humidity near 67 percent, three deaths occurred and more than thirty people collapsed. Victims ranged from Manhattan and Brooklyn to Newark, with details including Leopold Grossman and Frances Halloran and others, as beaches draw crowds for relief.
Robert L. Smith of the trustees said Charles C. Dickinson never owed the Carnegie company a dollar though his fall in October damaged his health and status. The Carnegie board added new directors in 1930 to pursue a conservative lending policy, and Dickinson’s leadership drew opposition from those investors while his personal affairs worsened.
Dr Henry Cottrell Rowland formerly of New York married Mary Fuller Parkinson sister of Elizabeth Parkinson known as Mile Parkins. The ceremony occurred in London on June 26 with a Paris trip planned afterward. Rowland, an author physician and explorer, had recently divorced.
American engineer William P Pittmann, captured with insurgents at Bluefields Bluff, was sent inland under Madriz soldiers. An offer to swap him for Colonel Salamanca was refused by General Rivas. Pittmann’s chances of release are slight. he may be moved to Managua.
In Corning New York July 9 a glass worker Walter Sweet died after attempting to save two Hungarian laborers from furnace fumes. Walter Fleming escaped but weakened. The Hungarians perished after fumes surged from the grate.
Madeline Clark twelve and Sadie Jacobofsky thirteen members of Rev Frederick Mills Clark’s Episcopal summer camp drowned while bathing in Whaley Pond twenty five miles east of Poughkeepsie New York. Clark died while attempting to save Jacobofsky as others were rescued by two supervising women Hilderbrand and Hamilton.
In Wellesley Massachusetts Miss Florence Jennison and Miss Mary Palmer both nineteen, classmates at Wellesley College, drowned in Lake Waban while bathing with friends. Palmer swam beyond depth, Jennison tried to help but both disappeared and were later recovered.
Henry Fisher and James Roberson, both of Kearny New Jersey aged 21 and 17, suffered burns when the forty foot Minnie H. exploded and caught fire. They jumped into the water and were rescued by George W. McCauley and others in nearby boats before being taken to Bayonne Hospital. The explosion occurred off Constable Hook near Orford Copper Works in Kill van Kull as 25 others were saved by motor craft.
Aviator Brookins reaches more than a mile up Brookins mountain altitude of 6 175 feet before gasoline fails and he is forced to glide to earth. The incident highlights his daring ascent and safe landing after engine troubles.

Officials verify the record with triangulation and engineering teams while a crowd of about 100 000 watched from piers and beaches. Brookins considered the day’s flight a triumph despite fuel limits and engine pauses.
