Gloucester July 9 Schooner John Preston reports immense schools of mackerel extending over twenty-five miles off Block Island. Fish were so thick that catching large quantities at once was impossible. Preston plans to return to seek the school. Special notice of Pocono Mountain Special trains via Lehigh Railroad with dining car meals.
Mrs. Luba Aisenstadt thirty seven a piano teacher drowned in a bathtub at her mother's home in New York City. She had come from Russia last October with her husband a language teacher. She left a note to her husband about the heat and planned a bath before suffering a fatal mishap.
Matthew Thompson of 260 Spring Street, a track repairman on the Ninth Avenue division of the Manhattan Elevated Railway, was struck by a northbound express and hurled to the street. He suffered a shoulder injury and possible leg and internal injuries, was carried to New York Hospital, and may have fractures.
The heat peaked at 94 as ten dozen heat related cases crowded hospitals and homes. Dozens of names appear in the casualty list including Amy Adams and James Boyle among others, with countless others overcome while at work or home. Forecast promises relief with fair weather and cooler conditions over the weekend.
President and Mrs Roosevelt departed Oyster Bay at 9 PM aboard the Sylph for a day cruise up the Hudson. He planned luncheon with a family friend and would return before midnight tomorrow. Only close family knew of the trip until news leaked.
Washington July 9 The President has decided that the Jewish petition must be finally disposed of before further efforts to resolve the Manchurian issue. No action on Manchuria is expected until September as Russian troops vacate except for railroad guards. Russia cites evacuation completion as a prerequisite to opening new ports, a rationale viewed as obscure but accepted.
Secretary Hay met Jewish leaders in Washington to press the Presidents plan to present a petition to Russia via Mr Riddle in St Petersburg. The aim is to obtain safer conditions for Russian Jews and to ensure no delay in submitting the petition next week. The petitions, identical in wording, urge U S good offices with Russia and are filed at the State Department.
A committee of protestants from the Hebrew community plans a visit to President Roosevelt to outline how their petition to the Czar will be transmitted. Leo N. Levi, a committee member, says they have been invited and will go, aiming to obtain influential names and a timely delivery.
Willian H Signet of McKeesport Penn announces the birth of his twentieth child named Theodore Roosevelt Signet. The President sent a congratulatory White House letter dated July 7 praising the name and extending best wishes to the family.
The Pope Leo XIII showed initial improvement after a morning of hopeful activity but suffered a relapse. Doctors reported bowel trouble and pleural effusion as the cause, with Dr Rossoni newly summoned to assess the Pontiff.
Special to The New York Tribune reports that the Pope Leo XIII’s condition worsened after a brief improvement. A new doctor’s consultation followed a diagnosis of excessive nourishment causing diarrhea. The Pope remained lucid and insisted on his own will despite illness and looming examinations.
Rome July 9 reports Neapolitans in deep emotion as Pope Leo nears end. Cardinal Prisco notes the desperate step of invoking the blood of St Gennaro, kept in a petrified vial, which some say liquefies and boils when the saint intervenes. A large crowd witnessed the vial turn liquid today.
Rome observes the Pope’s clear understanding that death nears. He has discussed his will and funeral wishes with Cardinal Satolli and wants burial in St John Lateran. The tomb design mirrors Pope Innocent III’s, featuring a sarcophagus, bass relief and statues.
Rome reports a Vatican arrival from Carpineto Pope Leo birthplace. The deputation pressed to the Pontiff but he sent his benediction and best wishes amid his alarming illness.
Houston report notes General Miles praising Pope Leo XIII at ninety three, calling him one of the great men and predicting a successor may come from across the water. Miles, on a South fortifications tour, plans future stops in San Antonio after arriving from Galveston.
