A violent mob attack in East St. Louis leads to multiple deaths and widespread arson. Martial law is declared as state troops and guardsmen move in to quell the violence amid reports of hundreds of injuries and extensive property damage including rail yards and industrial plants.
U S Secret Service reveals a German led conspiracy to destroy or hinder Great Lakes shipping to delay U S war effort. Several ships were sunk or damaged near the Soo and Detroit rivers in a pattern blamed on conspirators aided by American sympathizers. Canada may be asked to assist.
More than 3,100,000 men and women registered in the state military census in the greater city between June 11 and 25, with complete returns due next week as registrations continue from residents traveling. Five boroughs total is estimated near 3,250,000, city cost not exceeding 20,000.
