Samuel Stevens Sands Jr the stepson of William K. Vanderbilt and brother of G. Winthrop Sands died when a racing car tire blew out on the South Country Road near Horace Rumsey Westhampton Beach. The car skidded and Sands was crushed by the steering shaft. Mrs Sands raced from Southampton to the scene but arrived after his death.
